Lifesaving Medical Equipment Supports T&T's Covid-19 Response

The Embassy of Japan, with the support of UNOPS, handed over lifesaving medical equipment to the Ministry of Health yesterday to support Trinidad and Tobago in its fight against Covid-19, as part of an ongoing project to enhance healthcare in the region.

The Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, His Excellency Tatsuo Hirayama, handed over the equipment to Minister of Health, the Honourable Terrence Deyalsingh, at the Ministry of Health in Port of Spain.

Also in attendance were Country Representative of PAHO/WHO, Dr. Erica Wheeler, and the Director of the UNOPS Multi-Country Office for the Caribbean, Costa Rica and Panama, Alejandro Rossi, who attended virtually.

A total of 60 pieces of equipment have been purchased and delivered to T&T, including:  15 ultrasound scanning systems, 15 ICU patient monitors, 15 hospital stretchers and 15 electric hospital beds for use in ICU.

Additional equipment will be delivered during the first quarter of this year, including additional ventilator systems, infusion pumps, syringes, infusion pump volumetric, intensive care hospital beds and electrical suction pumps.

Funding from the Government of Japan was used to purchase the equipment, while UNOPS managed the procurement process.

The Governments of Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, Guyana and Suriname are being supported through this project.
