With support from UNFPA, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago decided to expand the contraceptive method by introducing contraceptive implants.
The Introduction to Contraceptive Implants Workshop was held from March 25th – 27th 2019 at the La Maze Room at the Mt. Hope Women’s Hospital.
With support from UNFPA, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago decided to expand the contraceptive method by introducing contraceptive implants. This represents an important step towards realizing women’s rights to choose their preferred method as well as to enhance family planning quality of care in T&T.
The implant that the Government has decided to introduce is Jadelle and will be incorporated into the already existing contraceptive methods in the country. This commitment to implementing a comprehensive and integrated approach to SRH is in keeping with the country’s international, regional and national commitments, such as The Programme of Action, SDG 3, the Montevideo Consensus and the Regional Integrated Strategic Framework to address Adolescent Pregnancy.
The workshop included capacity building of health providers, registration of users and counselling, follow-up, referral and removal of implants. This pilot has been executed at 6 health facilities and all participating centres have nominated those to become trained providers. The 6 facilities were The Sangre Grande Hospital, Sangre Grande Health Centre, Scarborough Hospital, Scarborough Health Centre, FPATT and Mamatoto.
